Welcome to my latest newsletter for residents of Cheshire – John Dwyer Police & Crime Commissioner

Welcome to my latest newsletter for residents of Cheshire.
I hope that you have been able to spend time with family and loved ones over the summer holidays.    Since my last update we have seen Cheshire Constabulary in national headlines, following the trial and sentencing of Lucy Letby. The nature and extent of her crimes have shocked and horrified us all, and I pay tribute to the many officers and staff who worked day and night to bring her to justice.   Over summer I have continued my work to tackle ‘honour’-based abuse in Cheshire, and I have been out across the county to hear about how my community funding is making a difference.

Op Hummingbird As with every story you see in the news, there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes. Delivering justice for Lucy Letby’s victims and their families was the result of years of hard work by the Operation Hummingbird team and the Constabulary has produced a documentary of interviews with senior officers, giving the public an insight into the headlines.

Project Cherish Through my Police Innovation Fund, Cheshire Constabulary has issued 3,000 seatbelt covers to neurodiverse children across Cheshire. The covers contain cards which will enable emergency responders to communicate with children who may be non-verbal or have other additional needs at the scene of an accident. Watch the video and find out more.

Savera UK Survey Following a successful conference to highlight the importance of tackling ‘honour’-based abuse in Cheshire, Savera UK and I have launched a survey to find out what people already know about this abhorrent crime and what more we can do to help people and professionals spot the signs. Have your say here.

Back on track Through my Community Cashback Fund I have supported LiveWire’s ‘Back on Track’ project, which works with young people aged 12-18 who are at-risk of school exclusion and potentially becoming involved in crime.

PCC’s Awards Last month I held an awards evening at police HQ for individuals and organisations who have gone above and beyond in working with the police to make Cheshire even safer. I always want to shine a spotlight on the everyday heroes who make this the safest county to live in, work in and visit.

Disability Awareness It was a pleasure to once again attend Disability Awareness Day alongside the police museum and local policing team. It’s always great to get direct feedback from people about the issues affecting them and how as Commissioner I can bring different areas into focus for the Constabulary.

Thank you for reading this latest update.   For more news and information don’t forget to visit my website, and if there is anything I can do to help then please don’t hesitate to contact me via the details below.
Best Wishes,

John Dwyer Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire

Working together to tackle ‘honour’-based abuse in Cheshire

Since December 2022 I have been working in partnership with Savera UK – a charity that provides support for those experiencing ‘honour’-based abuse (HBA) and harmful practices – to raise awareness of these abhorrent crimes and support victims.

This was initially through providing funding for a HBA and Harmful Practices specialist worker at Savera UK to provide one-to-one support for survivors and people at risk of HBA in Cheshire. In May I secured further funding to enable Savera UK to boost their awareness-raising work and deliver training to schools and professionals who work with vulnerable people on how to spot the signs of HBA and support victims.

We know that HBA and harmful practices will be taking place in Cheshire, but we also know that they are underreported. It’s vital that victims have confidence in reporting their experiences and a conference was held in July with partners from the police, criminal justice and charity sector to outline how we can work together in Cheshire to achieve this.

The next stage of the work to tackle HBA in Cheshire involves us knowing what level of understanding there is in our communities and wider professional sectors around HBA and harmful practices, to better inform future work.

We’re also asking if frontline professionals who have regular contact with people who may be victims of HBA on a daily basis would benefit from training designed to help spot the signs of HBA and harmful practices.

As people return from their summer holidays, we have set up a short survey which is available here and will be open until midday on Friday 29 September: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/PCCHBA1/.

The more data we can gather to inform our campaign and raise awareness of HBA and harmful practices, the more we will be able to identify and support victims.

Best Wishes

John
